Here are some additional ideas and tips for you as you go back to conducting classroom (or virtual) courses during the time we still have safety requirements to meet under COVID-19 state regulations.
- Ask students their current workplace requirements and offer your classes around those rules, so they feel safe while conducting hands-on evaluations or Conducting Hands-on Evaluations or Classroom Skills
- Wear a mask and gloves throughout the class. Make sure that everyone is following good Handwashing techniques and putting on a new pair of gloves before and after cleaning, switching out of lungs, using the bathroom, computer, etc.
- Properly clean and disinfect your equipment and surfaces before the student touches a manikin, in between any bathroom visits or breaks, and after the class. This includes your manikins, AED Trainers, BVMs, and other equipment, such as AV equipment used for the class.
- Keep everyone 6 feet apart and keep the masks on, except when giving breaths. If they don't feel comfortable giving breaths, they are able to skip the breaths and do hands-only CPR, but only on the adult manikins. Breaths are required for infants and children and also in the BLS classes (the face portion of the mask from the BVM can be used for breaths in BLS).
- Two-person (BLS) training exercises should still be done by simulating the switch, on their own individual manikins (not sharing a manikin). Have one person do the breaths on their manikin and let the other know they can begin compressions. Switching roles as needed (but on their own manikin) to simulate one patient being worked on.
- Try teaching using a blended format and only meet for the hands-on portion. This limits the time together and offers less exposure to everyone than having a long day in the classroom.
- When you finish your class, disinfect the manikins and other equipment one last time with your bleach solution and allow it to air dry before packing them up.
If your student feels uncomfortable doing a class. Mention to the student that some state departments and employers are offering card extensions or online courses right now until things are safer. They could find out if that is an option for them by speaking to their employer or by calling their state licensing department.
Hopefully, things will be going back to normal soon. if you still are having issues, feel free to reach out to me or click here to schedule a time for dashboard training (for a training call or zoom session).
Thank you for reaching out and being part of our instructor team. We wish you much success!
